Historically, many different unit systems have been used, in which a unit system is defined as a set of units of measurement with rules that link them to each other. The unit of measurement is the defined size of the value used as the measurement scale for the same type of value, such as measurements of length, weight, and volume.

In the past, many measurement systems were defined at the local level, and they could be based on mysterious factors such as the height of the king’s thumb. While this may apply at the local level, when considering trade, as well as science, having a unit system based on units that others may not be able to integrate or understand makes interaction difficult. Therefore, the development of many international and harmonious systems was developed over time. Today, some of the unit systems used include the metric system, imperial system, and humanitarian units in the United States.

The International System of Units (SI) is a standard metrics system currently in use, and consists of seven SI base units of length, size, duration, temperature, power level, light intensity, and number of objects. Although SI is used almost universally in science (including the US), other countries such as the United States still use their own unit system. This is in part due to the significant financial and cultural costs involved in transforming the valuation system compared to the potential benefits of using a standard system. As US (USC) humanitarian units are heavily focused on the United States, and SI is already being used in many systems where suspension is important, daily use of USC is still prevalent in the United States, and it is unlikely to change. Thus, multi-unit converters comprising this Conversion Calculator are present, and will continue to do so to ensure that people around the world are able to communicate with different levels effectively.
